Project

A new horizon on ‘The Green’

A reimagined Eaton Hall that fosters collaboration and sparks innovation.

Tufts University Eaton Hall

Tufts University
Medford, MA

Guided by a comprehensive feasibility study centered on space planning and energy efficient design strategies, Finegold Alexander transformed the historic Eaton Hall into a dynamic environment that elevates teaching and learning across the many departments is serves. The building was reconfigured to provide a cohesive layout that integrates classrooms, offices, labs, and a flexible assembly space for events and instruction. Collaboration zones are strategically scattered throughout the building to offer space for students to connect outside of the classroom.  As part of the campus-wide initiative to make Tufts University buildings more energy efficient, Eaton Hall is now fully heated and air conditioned with all new systems: new HVAC equipment, new plumbing distribution, new fire alarm system, a revamped building skin, and an upgraded electrical service.  Improvements to sustainability, functionality, accessibility and wayfinding align with the contemporary teaching and learning while honoring the original, historic design.

With Eaton Hall’s central location on campus, during the design and construction phases, the design team witnessed the Tufts community come to life. Moments like students returning to campus in September after a quiet summer to the jam-packed weekend around graduation showed how the renovated building could influence the student body that surrounded it.

“Not only does this project make some much-needed modernizations to the building, but it also serves to bolster and celebrate the departments it houses. With this newly renovated, warm, and inviting space—located in a prominent location on campus—we hope to continue to foster collaborations and highlight the importance of these essential components of our liberal arts and sciences education.”
