Spofford Pond Elementary School Electrification Study
With CMTA, FA Energy helps a Boxford school plan for HVAC electrification
FA Energy collaborated with CMTA to complete a comprehensive feasibility study for the electrification of the HVAC systems at the Spofford Pond School. The goal was to add cooling to the building and eliminate fossil fuels. The existing building was built in multiple phases between 1965 and 1997 and suffers from various envelope deficiencies including high air infiltration and the lack of insulation in many exterior walls. Improvements in thermal resilience and air sealing would support the HVAC electrification and improve comfort for students and staff. The scope of this project did not include a full renovation, therefore, upgrades to the building envelope must be strategic and designed for the least impact to the program and existing conditions.
FA Energy provided architectural support in coordinating mechanical closet layout for new heat pump equipment while minimizing the impact on classroom function and teaching space. Envelope recommendations were crafted in a tiered low, medium, and high approach, starting with the minimal upgrades that should be performed to reduce air infiltration.
FA Energy analyzed original construction details, thermal imagery and existing conditions of the school. Recommended envelope improvements centered around reducing air infiltration and targeting specific thermal bridges at the roof and exterior walls.
