Innovation and Stewardship at Wellesley’s Claflin Hall

Optimizing Energy Efficiency, Student Comfort, and Historic Character

Wellesley College Claflin Hall

Wellesley College
Wellesley, Massachusetts

Claflin Hall, built in 1916, is a cornerstone of Wellesley College’s iconic Tower Court complex. Housing 136 students, the historic residence hall underwent comprehensive renovations by Finegold Alexander to address deferred maintenance, enhance energy performance, and improve student amenities. This phased project, scheduled over two consecutive summers (2024 and 2025), minimizes academic-year disruptions.

Key improvements included upgrading the thermal envelope with insulated interior walls, interior storm windows, and selective air sealing to boost energy efficiency and comfort. The heating system was transitioned to low-temperature hot water, while electrical and plumbing systems were modernized. Common areas, including the ground floor and historic living room, were reimagined with new technology, lighting, and furnishings. Additional updates included improved laundry, fitness, and study spaces, as well as eliminating tandem rooms for enhanced privacy. These upgrades honor Claflin Hall’s architectural heritage while preparing it for future generations.

“To the Finegold team, this is another great design accomplishment. You have an amazing vision for blending historic details with modern flair, including lighting, furniture, and finishes (color, tile, etc). I love walking through your projects before-and-after and seeing your vision come alive.”
