Temple Israel Tulsa
Finegold Alexander Architects was engaged by Temple Israel Tulsa in 2023 to explore ways for their spiritual home to respond better to contemporary community needs; for worship, study and gathering. The initial concept phase explored renovation and new construction approached, as well as multiple sites and approaches to building on their current site. From this feasibility work, the decision was made to create a new building on the existing site. The current design envisions light-filled, flexible spaces infused with the warmth of natural materials. Together these spaces will create a healthy, secure and inspiring new home for the congregation and for welcoming the community.
The new synagogue has been designed in support of TI’s values and to support the Jewish concept of Tikkun Olam (repairing the earth) through the use of partial wood structure, ground source heat pumps, healthy materials, salvaging of the major Ten Commandments tablets from the previous structure’s north façade, limestone cladding and monumental wood doors from the current synagogue. Substantial site work will raise the building first floor above the floodplain, and stormwater detention is provided through dry stream beds and native plantings. The project is currently in the bidding phase.

At the former entrance of the existing site, two 42-foot-tall concrete tablets cast-in-place with a sculptural depiction of the Ten Commandments will be moved to a sacred garden visible through the curtainwall at the front of the sanctuary. The tablets originally designed by Bernard ‘Poco’ Frazier, created to form the monumental north façade of the existing sanctuary, will be salvaged from the main building and mounted to steel supports to become freestanding sculptures in the sacred garden. An artist will design an installation for the back of the tablets.
