J.V. Fletcher Library
The J.V. Fletcher Library first opened its doors in 1895 and has undergone several renovations since then. The Town of Westford and the Library hired Finegold Alexander Architects as the existing library did not meet the current needs of the community but wanted to keep their historic library. The new addition to the rear of the building encompasses 3 stories while the renovation of the existing building addresses system updates, programmatic changes, access and ADA compliance linking to the new addition. The design also incorporates the creation of new landscape, vehicular movement and parking plans.
The library expansion will make the building 50 percent larger, increasing the space to 35,159 square feet and doubling the space for children and tripling the space for young adults. The library will be fully accessible, and the design increases the number of public meeting spaces. The existing façade will remain, calling back to the library’s significant history.
“Today’s symbolic spadeful marks the celebration of the next transformative chapter of the J.V. Fletcher Library as we usher in a versatile library design which will serve residents well into the 21st century.”

The design meets Westford’s sustainability goal and has a pEUI of 25.67 compared to the national library average of 130. J.V. Fletcher is currently under construction with an estimated construction of November 2026. Infrared photographs taken from a proprietary FLIR camera during the J.V. Fletcher Library site walk-through on May 16, 2023, picked up differentials in temperature on the surfaces. The tool, along with observations and analysis of original drawings, helped inform our design team’s recommendations for improving the envelope of the existing building.
“We are honored to be entrusted with the renovation and expansion of the J.V. Fletcher Library for the community of Westford. Our design approach focuses on preserving the library's heritage while enhancing its functionality and inviting atmosphere."
