2, 4, and 6 Mariner Way
Finegold Alexander designed three new homes on Mariner Way that blend seamlessly into Nantucket’s historic residential fabric while offering the performance and livability of contemporary design. Working closely with the Nantucket Historic District Commission, the project team refined building massing, fenestration and details to ensure the houses “sit quietly” within the neighborhood, drawing from the island’s tradition of forthright primary volumes with elements added over time. Equally important were environmental considerations: collaboration with Verdant Landscape Architects and the Nantucket Conservation Commission shaped resilient plantings and site strategies suited to the island’s coastal ecology. Each home features a highly efficient building envelope, achieving a HERS rating of 52 to meet the MA Stretch Code. Inside, open, light-filled layouts are imbued with a sense of calm, creating homes that feel both distinctly Nantucket and distinctly new.
“Designing on Nantucket is an act of listening—listening to the site, to the island’s history, and to the voices of its community. Our work at Mariner Way was shaped by a close and thoughtful collaboration with the HDC, the Conservation Commission, and our partners on the ground. Together, we created homes that feel rooted in the island’s character while supporting the way people live today.”

The Mariner Way site plan features a thoughtfully designed greenscape with meandering paths to create a ‘mini neighborhood.’ The three houses respond to both the street and to the natural landscape beyond, with the main gable of 6 Mariner Way facing the water. Landscape elements include unpainted, open picket fences to define the street edge, native plantings and individual parking courts for each residence.

“At Mariner Way, the success of the design came down to the details. Nantucket’s architectural language is subtle and getting it right requires craftsmanship that honors the island’s traditions. From the proportion of dormers to trim profiles, every decision was made to ensure the homes are both enduring and thoroughly well built.”
