Architect Vanlim Ma knows the value of architecture and the communities it serves. To young designers, she says to travel the world to experience these cultures how they influence the buildings around them. For this month's Staff Spotlight, we sat down with Vanlim to discuss her love for architecture and why she entered this career. Keep reading to see the Q&A.
Q: What inspired you to become an architect?
I was inspired by my grandpa to become an architect. We made a promise: I would design, and he would build. He was a general contractor in Cambodia, organizing masonry workers for residential job sites. While babysitting me, he would take me—less than 9 years old—along on his motorcycle. Although our dream never came true, I had already fallen in love with the profession.

Q: If you could give advice to a young designer, what would you say?
Go travel and experience architecture firsthand. It is the best teacher. It offers the chance to immerse yourself in different cultures and engage with diverse communities. These experiences broaden your perspective, spark creativity, and inspire innovative solutions.
Q: Do you have any guiding design principles in your process?
Minimal, functional, and driven by nature. I believe that great design is, first and foremost, unique—yet simple and purposeful. A building should feel embedded within its natural surroundings. This philosophy was shaped by the teachings of Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, and Frank Lloyd Wright.

Q: What have been some of your career highlights/proudest achievements so far?
Earning my license was a significant milestone, the hardest and proudest moment of my life. Through the many exams, I realized just how much I had studied and learned along the way. The process not only deepened my knowledge but also strengthened my confidence in my abilities as an architect. My proudest achievement in this journey was knowing that I persevered and never gave up.
Q: Do you have a favorite city to visit for architecture?
I don’t have a favorite city, as every city is unique. However, recently, I’ve developed an interest in textiles, patterns, and textures. In 2022, I visited Morocco to stay with a friend and was deeply impressed by the architecture. The detailing, craftsmanship, and vision behind each palace were incredibly inspiring. During my trip, I discovered the Yves Saint Laurent House in Marrakech. I will always remember the striking Majorelle Blue. The house, its garden, and the adjacent museum all left a lasting impression on me.

Q: Do you have a favorite building or perhaps a favorite architect?
I admire Tadao Ando for his unique and elegant architectural style, characterized by the use of high-quality concrete and exceptional craftsmanship. One of his projects that I particularly appreciate is the Museum SAN, located in Wonju, South Korea. I admire the thoughtful integration of symbolism, site planning, local interactions, views, and the memorable moments he creates for visitors throughout their journey in the space. It remains memorable to this day.
