Finegold Alexander Architect Adam Sitterly, RA, says history and nature inspire his work. For August’s Staff Spotlight, we sat down with Adam to discuss his architecture inspirations, favorite cities, and proudest accomplishments. Keep reading to learn more.
Q: What inspired you to become an architect?
I grew up intrigued by places where people, history, and nature converge. Architecture lets me shape those connections in tangible ways.
Q: If you could give advice to a young designer, what would you say?
Stay curious! Observe closely – the environment, the context, and the clients’ visions.
Q: Do you have any guiding design principles in your process?
The ‘Conditions of Satisfaction’ are paramount. Buildings exist to serve needs, so I focus on translating clients’ ideas into functional, practical designs.
Q: What have been some of your career highlights/proudest achievements so far?
I have enjoyed designing homes for families, restaurants that bring people together, industrial spaces, and a maternity ward in a developing country. Most recently, I am proud to have contributed to a new school.
Q: Do you have a favorite city to visit for architecture?
Kyoto. The gardens are serene, indoor spaces flow quietly to the outdoors, and the buildings feel deeply connected to the environment.

Q: Do you have a favorite building or perhaps a favorite architect?
I admire Frank Lloyd Wright for blending Japanese design principles – like simplicity, natural materials, and seamless indoor/outdoor connections – with a Western approach to space and structure.
