For February's Staff Spotlight, we sat down with Designer Juanita Libreros, who was promoted to Designer last year after graduating from the Boston Architectural College, to hear about her inspirations, educational achievements, and why Qatar is her favorite city for architecture. Read her answers from the Q&A below.
Q: What inspired you to become an architect/designer?
I first became interested in architecture through model making. I loved creating miniature environments that became the backdrop for stories I imagined and brought to life. That early fascination with storytelling through space, combined with my mother’s background in architecture, ultimately inspired me to pursue a career in the field.
Q: If you could give advice to a young designer, what would you say?
Stay curious and open to new places, perspectives, and experiences. Growth comes from continuously exploring beyond what feels familiar.
Q: Do you have any guiding design principles in your process?
I am deeply interested in understanding the core purpose of each project and how various contextual elements can shape the design. Through my involvement in multiple proposals at FA, I’ve especially enjoyed researching the site and learning about the communities connected to each project. Ultimately, I believe thoughtful design must be rooted in community, and that perspective continues to guide my architectural journey.
Q: What have been some of your career highlights/proudest achievements so far?

One of my proudest achievements has been earning my Master of Architecture from the Boston Architectural College in 2025 — a milestone that reflects years of dedication and hard work. Another highlight was receiving the 2023 Alpha Rho Chi Medal from the Savannah College of Art and Design in recognition of my involvement with the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS). Both experiences have been deeply meaningful in shaping my professional path.
Q: Do you have a favorite city to visit for architecture?

It’s difficult to choose just one, but Doha, Qatar stands out. Each visit reveals innovative designs that thoughtfully celebrate Qatari culture and heritage.
Q: Do you have a favorite building or perhaps a favorite architect?

I am especially drawn to museums and libraries for their civic and cultural significance. Two of my favorites are the National Museum of Qatar and the Qatar National Library, both of which embody a strong sense of place while creating powerful public experiences.
