In designing the renovation and addition to this library, the primary goal of Finegold Alexander + Associates Inc was to integrate an existing 19,000 sf historic building with a contemporary addition to create a 42,000 square foot facility. The triangular addition features a three-story space which looks out across a new entrance court toward the historic Carnegie Library. While the diagonal shape of the addition satisfies many functional and aesthetic requirements, its construction was conditioned by an underground railroad and services that had to be straddled. |
