South End Landmark Restored for 23 Condos, Retail Space
-by Marilyn Jackson, Boston Homes staff writer
By summertime - in another four months - a long-vacant South End landmark on Washington Street at the corner of Union Park Street will be transformed into a mixed-use, five-story building with 23 stunning residences alone with two commerical spaces.
What is unique about this development project is that from various angles, the white marble and granite building constructed in the Renaissance Revival Style about 100 years ago for the Boston Penny Savings Bank looks distinctly separate for the contemporary, three-story addition of clear and translucent glass and silvery metal. Yet the light-colored materials compliment each other. (Click here for a PDF of the news article.)
