Market Square Historic District
Newburyport, Massachusetts |
|
An early 19th-century seaport, Newburyport's original town center and waterfront had been slated for demolition as part of an "urban renewal" plan. After some destruction occurred, local citizens demanded a new approach consistent with Newburyport's historical significance. FA+A's resulting revitalization plan emphasized preservation and compatible new development to protect and enhance the 11-acre historic district, the largest parcel of Federalist-era architecture in the U.S. The project was implemented through use of HUD urban renewal funding, and has been cited for the high degree of cooperation between local, state and federal agencies. |
